S.E.N. / Gifted & Talented

During their primary education it is likely that some of our pupils will require extra support with their work. This might be short term due to a medical problem (such as a fractured arm) or difficulty over a specific aspect of the curriculum. The majority of these needs can be accommodated in the classroom with the class teacher providing a differentiated curriculum to meet the short term needs of the pupil. Other children require individual or small group support, which can be provided by the school’s Learning Support Assistant under the direction of the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO), and the class teacher.

Whilst some children will require extra support with their work die to a medical learning difficulty there are others who may have a particular gift or talent in an area of the curriculum. We hold a register for ‘Gifted and Talented’ children. Parents are consulted when a child is added to the register and appropriate action is taken to ensure the child can continue to excel in this area. This may mean the child studying with a year group older than themselves or it may include specialist support from outside agencies.

A few children will require specialist support, which the school can provide through the services available from Cambridgeshire Local Education Authority. A Specialist Support Teacher (from the North Huntingdonshire Learning Support Base) visits the school on a regular basis to assess children and provide advice and resources for pupils with learning difficulties. Specialist advice is also available from Cambridgeshire’s Communication Therapy Service, the Advisory Teachers for the Hearing or Visually Impaired, the Educational Psychologist Service, and the School’s Medical Officer.

The school holds a register of children with special educational needs. Parents are consulted when a child is added to the register and informed of their child’s continuing needs and progress. The register is regularly reviewed and parents informed when their child is deemed to no longer require support. Any concern should, in the first instance, be discussed with your child’s class teacher. A copy of the school’s full Special Educational Needs Policy and Gifted and Talented Policy is available to view in the school office.
